• April 1940. The eyes of the world are on Narvik, a small town in northern Norway, source of the iron ore needed for Hiter's war machinery. Through two months of fierce winter warfare, Hitler is dealt his first defeat.

April 1940. Den gryende krigen i Europa virker fjern for nordmennene, men verdens øyne er allerede rettet mot Narvik som skiper ut jernmalmen Hitler er avhengig av for å holde det tyske krigsmaskineriet i gang. Natt til 9. april krenkes Norges nøytralitet og tyske soldater går i land. Bykommandanten overgir Narvik uten kamp, men ikke alle er villige til å legge ned våpnene. Et kompani på 200 norske soldater bløffer seg ut av byen og tar opp kampen. Blant soldatene finner vi den unge korporalen Gunnar Tofte, som får sin ilddåp i kamp mot de profesjonelle, tyske alpejegerne i fjellene. I Narvik blir Royal Hotell, der hans kone Ingrid Tofte jobber som stuepike og tolk, tyskernes nye hovedkvarter. Fra skyttergraven er det enkelt å vite hvem som er venn og hvem som er fiende. The successes of the German Blitzkrieg in 1939-41 were as surprising as they were swift.
