Divisional Cavalry

The bulk of Britain’s tank force is in the divisional cavalry regiments of the infantry divisions fighting in Belgium. Each division has its own Divisional Cavalry Regiment with three squadrons. Each squadron is equipped with eight Vickers Light Mark VIB tanks and 14 scout carriers. The regiment's only infantry is a sole Motorcycle Platoon that is part of the regimental headquarters squadron.

In the retreat to Dunkirk their role is to hold the Germans at bay long enough for the infantry to retreat to the next river where they can set up their next defense line. Although they have nothing of their own heavier than a .5-inch machinegun, a Divisional Cavalry Squadron can call on the infantry’s artillery and anti-tank guns for heavy punch.

The defenders of Lille were the only garrison accorded honours of war during the campaign of 1940 and with the defenders of Fort Vaux during the Battle of Verdun in 1916, one of only two French garrisons to receive this distinction by Germany in both world wars.^[10]
