The defenders of Lille were the only garrison accorded honours of war during the campaign of 1940 and with the defenders of Fort Vaux during the Battle of Verdun in 1916, one of only two French garrisons to receive this distinction by Germany in both world wars.^[10]

The British Expeditionary Force also known as the BEF were a contingent sent in 1939 to aid France in holding back the German forces.

The BEF were involved in various action trying to halt the rapid advance of the Germans but were forced to withdraw alongside the allies.
